How this days between dates calculator works

This calculator measures the time between two calendar dates. It shows the total number of days between the start date and the end date and also provides an overview in weeks, months and years. This is useful for planning projects, tracking time periods, or understanding durations in a more intuitive way.

Select a start date and an end date. The calculator determines how many days lie between these two points in time. If you want to treat the end date as a full day, enable the option to add one extra day to the total.

The date fields use the format provided by your browser and operating system, such as DD.MM.YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY. The result is independent of the displayed format and is based only on the calendar dates you select.

Examples of practical use

  • Deadlines: How many days are left until my deadline?
  • Events and trips: How many days or weeks did my vacation or trip last?
  • Contracts and rental periods: What is the exact length of a contract or rental period between two dates?

FAQ

How are the days between two dates calculated? +

The calculator takes your start date and end date and counts the number of calendar days between them. By default, the start date is included and the end date is excluded.

What does “Count the end date as a full day” mean? +

If you enable this option, 1 extra day is added. That means both the start date and the end date are treated as fully included in the count.

What does “Only count working days (Monday–Friday)” do? +

When enabled, the calculator excludes Saturdays and Sundays and counts only weekdays (Monday through Friday).

Can I see the difference in weeks, months and years? +

Yes. In addition to total days, the tool shows an overview in weeks, months and years so longer time spans are easier to interpret.

What happens if the end date is before the start date? +

The calculator will show an error message and won’t return a result. The end date must be the same as or later than the start date.

Do I need to choose a date format manually? +

No. The date picker uses your browser/region settings (for example DD.MM.YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY). The calculation uses the actual dates you select, independent of how they’re displayed.

Why do some websites show different day counts? +

Different tools use different counting conventions (for example whether the end date is included by default). This calculator uses consistent Gregorian calendar rules (leap years and month lengths) and avoids time zone or daylight-saving issues by calculating based on calendar dates.
